Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) sits in Christ Church on the south of the island, and almost every visitor to Barbados passes through it. This guide explains how transfers work, how long the drive takes to each part of the island, and how a pre-booked private chauffeur differs from joining the taxi queue.
How long does it take to get from the airport to your hotel?
Barbados is only 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, so nowhere is truly far — but road conditions and traffic matter more than distance.
Typical drive times from Grantley Adams International Airport: 10–15 minutes to the south coast (Oistins, Dover, St Lawrence Gap); 20–30 minutes to Bridgetown and the cruise terminal; 30–45 minutes to the west coast Platinum Coast (Holetown, Paynes Bay, Speightstown); 40–55 minutes to the east coast (Bathsheba) and the north (St Lucy). Add 15–20 minutes during weekday rush hours, roughly 7–9am and 4–6pm.
Private chauffeur, taxi rank or rental car?
A pre-booked private transfer means your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall with your name, helps with luggage, and takes you directly to your door at an agreed price. Nothing is metered and nothing is negotiated after a long flight.
The airport taxi rank works, but you queue, you share the road with everyone else arriving on the same flights, and larger parties are often split across vehicles.
A rental car makes sense if you want total independence for a whole stay — but remember Barbados drives on the left, roads are narrow, and signage in rural parishes is limited. Many visitors book a chauffeur for arrival and day trips instead.
Luggage, groups and child seats
Golf clubs, dive gear, surfboards and wedding dresses all need planning. Tell your driver the number of bags at the time of booking so the right vehicle is sent — a sedan for a couple, a luxury van for families and groups of up to ten or more.
Travelling with children? Request child seats when you book. It costs nothing extra to ask, and it saves a scramble in the arrivals car park.
Late-night and early-morning arrivals
Long-haul flights from the UK, Canada and the US often land in the evening, and departures frequently leave before dawn. Unique Chauffeurs operates 24/7, so a 2am pickup or a 4:30am departure run is a normal booking rather than a special request.
For departures, plan to leave your hotel three hours before an international flight. Your driver will monitor your flight and adjust if the schedule changes.
What to have ready when you book
Arrival date, flight number and landing time. Number of passengers and bags. Your hotel, villa or Airbnb address. A WhatsApp number so your driver can reach you on landing. That's it — you'll receive confirmation and can message your driver directly.
